Backlink Features

SEMrush offers some great backlink features with its comprehensive SEO toolkit.

The Backlink Analytics page gives you all the essential information about your backlink profile like historic data, number of backlinks, backlink types, referring domains, anchor text, TLD and trust status.

You can toggle between the tabs at the top of the page to view individual backlinks, anchors, referring domains, referring IPs, indexed pages and competitors.

There’s also a great Backlink Audit tool which calculates a toxic score for your backlinks, and lets you review, whitelist and disavow bad links right from the report.

Competitor research is easy too, because you can add competitors to SEMrush to look directly at their data side by side with your own.

Overall, SEMrush has a great range of backlink tools and features with plenty of valuable data.

I’d like to see the data itself better organized, though—the way it currently sits under multiple tabs makes it difficult to find the information you’re looking for right away, and there’s not much depth to the data unless you do a lot of digging.

Final Score: 7/10

Unique Features

SEMrush really shines in its competitor comparison features, allowing you to look at your own website data and that of your competitors (and other industry leaders) side by side.

With the Backlink Gap tool, you can add up to four competitors to compare, and SEMrush will analyze the backlink profiles to identify new link building opportunities for you.

You can do something similar with the Keyword Gap tool, which helps you find organic and paid keywords to target based on what your competitors are targeting and ranking for.

Finally, there’s a range of technical SEO features that can also help you improve and speed up your on-page SEO, such as a site audit tool and on-page SEO checker.

Final Score: 7/10

Data Quality

Data quality is a top priority when it comes to SEO and backlink tools, and SEMrush doesn’t compromise on that. It’s a well-respected data provider in 140+ countries and the data is refreshed on a regular basis.

Using SEMrush, you should never run into a problem with old or incorrect data.

Final Score: 10/10

Pricing

SEMrush starts at $99.95 per month for the basic plan, and there are $199.95 and $399.95 per month plans for more extensive options.

Final Score: 7/10

Backlink Features

Moz’s Link Explorer tool makes it easy to track your backlinks, identify and remove bad links, and work to improve the health of your backlink profile as a whole.

You can view individual links, referring domains, anchor texts, top pages, and new and lost links.

The Link Intersect tool allows you to compare competitor backlinks to see who is linking to multiple competitors in your industry.

All you need to do is add your competitor domains, and Moz generates a list of links that intersect between the domains. Essentially, it’s a list of promising new targets for link creation!

This tool is great because it’s so simple and effective, basically giving you an even faster way to do what people have been doing manually for a long time.

Final Score: 10/10

Unique Features

Moz offers a range of extra tools and features to improve your link building and SEO.

There’s a site crawling feature that works as a technical on-site SEO audit. This can be a huge help to make sure you aren’t shooting yourself in the foot with your on-page SEO before you even start with backlinks.

The Keyword Explorer tool lets you research new keywords, analyze the SERPs, get keyword suggestions and find out what keywords a domain is ranking for.

And finally, Moz has some great report creation features. On every page, you can export any data you want into a custom SEO report, applying any filters that you think are necessary.

Moz reports have many more customization options than most other leading SEO and reporting tools.

Final Score: 8/10

Data Quality

Moz’s data is the best of the best. It’s one of the industry standards and has the world’s largest backlink database of over 30,000,000,000 links.

The data is constantly updated and refreshed, so you can rest assured that you’re always getting the most reliable data to base your campaigns on.

Final Score: 10/10

Pricing

Moz starts at $99 per month. Like with SEMrush, this is one of the highest starting costs for an SEO tool—but you tend to pay a premium for using some of the most well-known and well-established tools.

That’s not to say that Moz isn’t worth the price—most would agree that it is. It’s simply something to consider, especially if you have a smaller budget to work with.

Final Score: 6/10

Backlink Features

Monitor Backlinks gives you all the information you need to conduct in-depth research about your backlinks and strategize to create more and better backlinks.

The tool automatically tracks your backlinks for you, displaying them in an easily-digestible list in the Your Links section.

semrush-vs-moz-vs-monitor-backlinks

You get essential information about each link including its URL, linking page, anchor text, follow status, Trust Flow and Citation Flow, Spam Score, Domain and Page Authority, TLD and more.

There’s a ton of info here that lets you easily understand who is linking to you and in what ways. You can then use this information to improve your overall backlink quality through well-directed campaigns based on real data.

The Link Analysis page breaks down your backlink situation in easy-to-read reports.

You can see how your links break down by TLD, IP, followed status and more. You can also see your top anchor texts and top linked pages in graphs and charts that make the data easy to visualize.

The Competitor Links page is also worth a mention. From here, you can track your competitors’ backlinks the same as you would your own.

This allows you to get a better understanding of your competitors’ strategies, find new link building opportunities and adapt your strategy to stay ahead of the game.

Final Score: 9/10

Unique Features

One of my favorite features of Monitor Backlinks is the in-built disavow tool. It’s super-easy to use and allows you to fight back against bad backlinks that can negatively impact your SERP rankings.

Simply choose the links you want to disavow from the Your Links page, and a disavow file is automatically generated for you to export and upload to Google.

semrush-vs-moz-vs-monitor-backlinks

You can even add rules that will automatically disavow bad links as they’re created!

Monitor Backlinks is big on automation. As well as tracking your backlinks and keyword rankings, it also sends automatic email notifications of important changes so that you’re always up to date.

These emails include regular updates on new and lost backlinks, keyword ranking changes, and when your competitors get new links or lose them.

Final Score: 7/10

Data Quality

Monitor Backlinks draws its data from many reputable sources such as Google, Moz, Majestic and Alexa as well as its own crawlers.

Aside from the fact that these are the most reputable data sources on the web and they’re all in one place, Monitor Backlinks also updates most of its data hourly or daily to keep you totally in the loop.

Final Score: 10/10

Pricing

Monitor Backlinks has flexible pricing options depending on how many domains and competitors you want to monitor.

You can get the most basic plan (one domain, two competitors) for just $25 per month, which easily makes it one of the most affordable SEO tools on the market.

Final Score: 9/10

SEMrush vs Moz vs Monitor Backlinks Verdict

Scoring each of these tools in the four categories gives a possible score of 40 points each.

The final scores:

  • SEMrush — 31
  • Moz — 34
  • Monitor Backlinks — 35

Monitor Backlinks has the usability to introduce new users to backlinks and link building without breaking the bank. It also has the serious depth and detail that longtime SEOs want and need, making it all-round an excellent choice.

While SEMrush, Moz and Monitor Backlinks are all great tools and I recommend that you try each of them for yourself, my highest recommendation for this review is Monitor Backlinks for having the best features at an even better price.
